Life VS Business – Case 3: Moving Walkways

Life- It's a moving WALKWAY, not STAND "in my" WAY

I love to travel. Scratch that. I love seeing new places and meeting new people. The actually "traveling" process is normally a nightmare. Angry mobs of anxious passengers barreling through terminals. Why does is seem that every part of the process is on speed EXCEPT for the moving WALKWAYS? People just stand there. It's frustrating.

Business- Marketing requires momentum.

More campaigns require momentum. How do you achieve momentum? DON'T STOP. When your campaign reaches a steady pace, keep going. If you stop posting to your BLOG or put your tweets on hold for a week, your customers will step out of sync and lose interest. The hard part is getting started. The HARDER part is to keep going.

Verdict – Moving walkways are a great way to accelerate travel, but when you stop, you'll just end up pissing people off.

Life VS Business – Case 2: Chinese Buffet Desserts

Life- Desserts at Chinese Buffets Always Suck!

What's the one thing every Chinese buffet has in common? Horrible desserts. The strange jellos with beans in them, the flavorless rock cookies and the brownies that taste like bubble gum. I'm amazed at the consistency of bad desserts at these establishments. Luckily, eating Chinese food is practically a dessert anyway. Most of the time I just pray for ice cream and settle for fortune cookies.

Business- Consistency Isn't Always a Good Thing.

Building a reputation for something positive is extremely powerful... just make sure it's something positive! Be known for your "rapid response time" or "exceptional quality." Just be consistent! Consistency is the key to building a great brand. It can be your greatest ally or your worst enemy. They last thing you want to be known for is your "mediocre support" or "convoluted contracts." Be consistent, be positive.

Verdict – It's pretty simple, keep good practices and cross your fingers for a promising fortune cookie.

Life VS Business – Case 1: Coffee Spoons

Life- Annoying Coffee Spoons.

I appreciate the idea of giving someone a spoon with their coffee as a way to stir sugar, milk, etc. However, I drink my coffee black and the spoon always arrives already in the coffee and without a saucer below it. What do I do with this spoon? I can't drink while it's in there, I don't have a napkin to set it on, so it's just going to have to leave a little coffee puddle on the table for the waitress. If you're going to give me a spoon, give me some place to put it.

Business- Never follow up with a dead end.

When you're trying to be proactive, it's important not to limit your thinking to "next step" only. You must always think at least 2 steps ahead. When you're writing an e-mail, don't just follow up, follow up with a call to action (set a meeting date, issue homework, etc.). If you send a client an article, explain why the article is relevant to them and include ideas on how to use it.

Verdict – You can always leave a dripping spoon on the counter and leave more work for your server… they’ll move on, but if you follow up with a dead end, your contact won’t.

Testing testing, 1... 2... 3...

Brett Miller

After a few different attempts for new websites, I've landed on a blog. I know, it seems pretty late 90s, but actually makes a lot of sense for me. I'll be launching the new Mind of Miller 2011 next week which I'm pretty excited about. It's only been around 2 YEARS since my last episode. Wow, where does the time go?

I believe I was living in St. Augustine at the time. Since then I've lived in Gainesville, Orlando and now I'm in Healdsburg, CA. Soon moving to the promise land for tech/biz geeks... Silicon Valley. Really looking forward to it. The last few years have been a roller coaster, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Amazing family, great friends and a wonderful girlfriend. New business ventures, new opportunity.

As for the blog, I'm going to split it up into 5 categories...
1.) Personal
2.) Media (Music, Movies and Books)
3.) Tech (Apple Fanboy at no extra charge)
4.) Money (Stocks, Markets, etc.)
5.) Sports

Until next time...
